The AI-4AI Research Fellowship is one of the many benefits available through the AI-4AI Professional Membership Program. As such, Professional membership is required for participation in the fellowship.

Please note that enrolling in the AI-4AI Professional Membership Program does not guarantee selection into the Research Fellowship. Fellowship places are awarded through a competitive selection process based on the published eligibility criteria.

Applicants who become professional members but are not selected for the current cohort will be placed on a priority waiting list for future fellowship cohorts, subject to meeting the selection requirements. In the meantime, they will enjoy the full range of the professional membership benefits throughout their membership period.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

The fellowship is designed for final-year undergraduate students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals in Africa who aspire to pursue MSc or PhD programmes in AI-related fields, particularly in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe.

Each fellowship cohort runs for six months.

Each cohort admits up to 15 participants, depending on the availability of mentors.

Yes. To apply for the Research Fellowship, applicants must first become a professional paid member of the African Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (4AI).

The membership fee serves as the application requirement and gives applicants access to the full range of 4AI membership benefits for one year. There is no separate fellowship application fee.

The Research Fellowship is a member benefit offered through the 4AI professional membership programme. Membership supports the delivery of the fellowship while providing applicants with access to year-round learning opportunities, networking events, technical workshops, mentoring, and other member-exclusive benefits, regardless of the fellowship outcome.

Complete the Professional Membership application through the fellowship website. Once your application is successfully completed, you will receive your Membership ID, which you can use to proceed with your fellowship application.

No. Professional membership does not guarantee admission to the fellowship. Selection is competitive and based on the strength of each application, alignment with the programme objectives, and available mentor capacity.

If you are not selected for the current cohort, your 4AI professional membership remains active for one year, and you will continue to enjoy all member benefits available during that period.

Applicants who are not selected may also receive priority consideration for future Research Fellowship cohorts, provided they continue to meet the eligibility requirements and places are available.

Your 4AI professional membership is valid for one year and is renewable annually.

If your membership is still active when applications open for a future cohort, you will not need to purchase another membership before applying. If it has expired, you will need to renew your membership.

Participants receive support in four key areas:

  • Research methodology and academic writing
  • Publication guidance and research development
  • Graduate school application material reviews
  • Eligibility for a recommendation letter upon successful completion

The programme is designed to strengthen both your research profile and your competitiveness for graduate study.

The fellowship provides publication support, and participants may work toward one or two research publications during the programme where mentor capacity allows.

While publication is encouraged, it is not guaranteed. Progress depends on the quality of the work, participant commitment, and available mentoring capacity.

Possibly. Depending on the project and mentor availability, participants may co-author publications with mentors or work independently with mentor guidance.

Participants can receive structured feedback on:

  • Academic CVs
  • Personal statements
  • Research proposals
  • Graduate application strategy

Participants should submit drafts before the weekly drop-in sessions to receive meaningful feedback.

The fellowship is designed to strengthen your application by helping you develop research experience, improve your application documents, and receive expert feedback. However, admission decisions are made solely by the universities to which you apply.

The fellowship follows a structured independence model.

Rather than weekly lectures, the lead mentor hosts a drop-in session where participants bring questions, draft work, methodological challenges, or application materials for discussion.

Participants are expected to make steady progress independently between sessions.

Although there are only one to two hours of scheduled mentor sessions each week, participants should expect to spend several additional hours independently reading literature, writing, conducting research, and preparing application materials.

This is an active fellowship rather than a classroom course.

Yes. Participants can ask questions in the paid 4AI professional community WhatsApp group, where mentors and experienced community members may also provide guidance.

Participants who successfully complete the fellowship in good standing will receive a certificate of completion from AI-4AI.

Participants who complete the fellowship successfully may be eligible for a recommendation letter from the AI-4AI Director.

Recommendation letters are not issued automatically. They are based on demonstrated research ability, professionalism, participation, and the quality of work completed during the fellowship.

The fellowship is led by Dr Uche Onyekpe, Director of AI-4AI, with additional academic mentors drawn from AI-4AI's network of researchers and academics.

Applicants must submit:

  • A current CV
  • A covering statement (maximum 500 words) explaining their research interests, target graduate programmes, and fellowship goals
  • A brief research idea or area of interest
  • Proof of an active 4AI membership

No. Applicants only need to submit a brief research idea or area of interest. Developing a full proposal is part of the fellowship.

The programme is primarily designed for applicants targeting MSc and PhD programmes in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe. However, applicants pursuing high-quality AI graduate programmes elsewhere may also apply if the fellowship aligns with their goals.

No. The fellowship is a research mentoring programme rather than a traditional course. It is intended for participants who are comfortable working independently and seeking targeted guidance from experienced researchers.

Successful applicants typically demonstrate:

  • A genuine interest in AI research
  • Clear graduate study ambitions
  • A willingness to work independently
  • Strong commitment to completing the six-month fellowship
  • Openness to feedback and continuous improvement

Yes, provided you can consistently dedicate sufficient time to your research, attend the weekly drop-in sessions, and make steady progress throughout the six months. The fellowship requires sustained commitment and self-directed work.

No. Participation in the AI-4AI Academic Research Fellowship does not guarantee a job offer, employment, internships, research assistantships, scholarships, graduate admission, or any other placement. Please also note that the fellowship is not an internship and does not include an internship component. It is designed to help participants strengthen their research skills through mentorship and independent research.

Yes. The AI-4AI Mentee Research Fellowship is a benefit of the AI-4AI Professional Membership. Professional Membership is required before being considered for the fellowship. Membership alone does not guarantee admission; selection is based on the quality of the application and demonstrated commitment to research.

Yes. The fellowship is fully virtual and open to Africans anywhere in the world, provided they have reliable internet access and can commit to participating throughout the six-month program.
